WHAT YOU EAT: The First of Six Essentials
September 15, 2009
“If it rots, eat it. Don’t eat it rotten. If it doesn’t rot don’t eat it!”
The first essential speaks to the saying, “You are what you eat.”
This, to some degree, is true. In today’s world, when much of our food supply is either grown using over-cultivated, nutrient-deficient, pesticide-rich soil, or loaded with hormones, antibiotics and/or preservatives that allow it to sit on the shelf forever, it’s as important now as ever that we embrace once and for all the impact of our diet on our health.
A general rule of thumb when it comes to making healthy food choices is to eat whole, unprocessed foods. Eating whole foods means just what it says: Eat the whole food. That’s right, no more tossing egg yolks, or peeling away the potato skins, or spitting out the apple seeds. Eat it all!
Now, I know this might sound radical. If this is the case for you, it is only because you have most likely been misinformed. Welcome to the truth. God (or Mother Nature, if that works better for you) made the food with all of its parts because they all contribute to our health in a unique way. Moreover, the different parts work together to make the contribution of the whole food greater than the sum of the individual parts. That means the egg yolk and egg white, when eaten together, work together to maximize the health benefits of each. Eating the potato peel allows for maximum digestion and utilization for the potato center. Eating the apple seeds completes the apple eating experience (if you don’t enjoy the taste of the seeds you can blend them into a smoothie using a high powered blender).
This rationale isn’t limited to eggs, potatoes and apples. It’s a universal principle. Just like the human body has no spare parts and all of its parts work together for the benefit of the whole body, so too do all the parts of the foods we commonly eat every day. Remember, we are what we eat. If you want to be healthy and whole then begin eating whole foods.
